In 1908, Theodore Roosevelt recognized the value of associations when he said: "Every man (woman) owes a part of his (her) time and money to the industry to which he (she) is engaged. No man (woman) has a moral right to withhold his (her) support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his (her) sphere."

We urge you to exercise your moral right and become a part of the working team that is the Florida Nurses Association. FNA- striving to improve conditions for nurses since 1909. We become stronger each time another nurse joins!

Membership is open to any licensed registered nurse (RN) in Florida. FNA dues include membership in the American Nurses Association (ANA) and your local District Nurses Association.

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP...

  • FNA is a strong organization of professional registered nurses. We function independently without being subsidized by other groups so that our loyalties are clear. We are the only nursing organization that advocates for nurses across all specialties and practice areas. We are a Constituent Member Association (CMA) of the American Nurses Association.
  • We have a 3 tiered dues system: Dues revenue is divided between the local, state and national levels allowing your dues dollar to have a greater impact on the future of nursing and healthcare. These funds pay for administrative costs such as staff salaries and benefits, maintenance of the building, program services, publications and nurse advocacy activities.
  • The membership carries with it a subscription to a new professional nursing journal, American Nurse Today (starting October 2006). All Florida nurses receive Florida Nurse, the official quarterly publications of FNA. Members of the association receive the American Nurse & Members Only newsletters and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners also receive the FNA ARNP Scope. We believe the mark of a professional is being informed with knowledge and information pertinent to the improvement of your profession.
  • FNA also develops publications with the purpose of helping and supporting nurses in their prospective work environments. These are available for a nominal fee.
  • FNA has a strong presence in Tallahassee and is the political watchdog when political issues that have an impact on nursing and on the care of the public. It is essential that the voice of nursing is clear and present when these critical issues arise. It is the strength of the membership behind us that allows us to be successful. The FNA provides up-to-date legislative information to its members and has developed a legislative network to enhance political knowledge and power of its members. All members are encouraged to participate at this level.
  • Participation in the activities of the FNA, such as the many conferences provides the opportunity for networking with colleagues and many nursing notables.
  • The ANA has developed standards of practice that can serve as a guideline for the practice of nursing in several specialty areas.
  • We are an advocate for nurses in the workplace through collective action and empowerment.
  • The FNA encourages and supports nursing research and scholarship through the Florida Nurses' Foundation Scholarships and Grants as well as other strategies including highlighting nursing research in our publications. In addition, we have established a "Nurses in Need" fund through the Foundation to assist nurses in financial crises.
  • The FNA fosters professional development and enhances the concept of teamwork through the work of its members.
  • Participation in the FNA serves to "re-energize" the professional nurse, through networking, cooperative action and first hand knowledge of our activities and our accomplishments.
  • The FNA provides a direct line to information by providing open line of communication to its members. We provide phone consultation on nursing issues and serve as an information resource to our members.
  • FNA's involvement in global healthcare issues, keeps us in touch with the cutting edge of what is happening in healthcare today.
  • Become a member. You can't afford not to join. Help us create the "preferred future" for nurses.

LEGISLATIVE ISSUES/BILLS...

You may find it very helpful to make regular visits to the Florida Legislature's websites.  For the Florida House of Representatives go to www.myfloridahouse.gov and for the Florida Senate go to www.flsenate.gov.  By going to these sites you can track the bills mentioned in FNA Legislative Alerts, the bills the FNA supports and also some that we might ask you to oppose.  On both sites there is a place to enter the bill number in the search box to the left of the screen.  At the next screen select the "ER" version under the "Bills" tab.
